A few hours ago I was on my way home from attempting not to splurge any unused money on junk food at the local convenient store down the street. Just as I entered the car, a woman began to approach; I could see her coming from a few yards away. My mother was convinced that she was a drunk; however, she rolled down the window as the woman approached the passenger side.
As she drew near, we realized that her red eyes were not caused by drunkeness, but from crying. She was young and a couple of inches shorter than I, she wore something similar to what one would probably find and elderly woman wearing. “I’m not asking for money,” she says, “I’m just wondering if you could buy me something to eat, I’m homeless.” My heart sank. “It’s ok if you don’t trust me with your money, but I haven’t eaten since yesterday”.
I emptied my pockets for her which held a few dollar bills and an abundance of coins. My mother did the same; she was remorseful for thinking of her as a drunk. “God bless you both” she said before walking away towards the main road.
Before then, I had never encountered a situation as that. Of course there are many homeless people around my city, but I’ve never been approached. I feel so mentally flat-lined and heavy hearted…
Could I have done more?
